Timo Werner Joins Tottenham on Loan, Chooses Unconventional Jersey Number

Timo Werner has become a notable addition to the Premier League during this winter transfer window. After completing his medical examinations, the German forward has signed a six-month loan contract with Tottenham.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal includes a purchase option worth around €17 million (£14.6 million). Werner, who struggled to find his form during his time at Chelsea, will aim to revive his career following two disappointing seasons. He has only started twice in the Bundesliga this season.

The 1996-born striker has scored just two goals in 14 appearances across all competitions, frequently finding himself on the substitutes’ bench. In his pursuit of more playing time and in the hopes of securing a spot in the Germany squad for the 2024 UEFA European Championship, Werner quickly agreed to Tottenham’s offer.

For his return to the Premier League, Werner has chosen to wear the number 16 jersey. Previously, he had been associated with numbers 11 and 19 at the professional level. However, the number 16 has previously been worn by Kieran Trippier (2015-2017), Kyle Walker (2010/11), and Gareth Bale (2007/08).

Despite facing criticism, Werner’s contributions on the field have been relatively effective. In the 2020/21 season, he provided 12 goals and 15 assists in 52 matches. In the 2021/22 season, he tallied 11 goals and 6 assists, while the 2022/23 season saw him score 16 goals and provide 6 assists.

Werner had initially experienced success during his early days at Chelsea, but his form declined over time. Now, with his loan move to Tottenham, he aims to rediscover his scoring touch and make a significant impact in the Premier League once again.
