Andre Onana swiftly departs for AFCON on a private jet to join the Cameroon squad, altering his travel plans after featuring in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
With less than 23 hours before Cameroon’s AFCON opener against Guinea, Onana, who delayed his journey to AFCON in Ivory Coast to participate in the crucial Premier League clash, catches a private jet from Manchester. The 27-year-old goalkeeper shared an image on Snapchat at 11 pm, showcasing his journey commitment.
After the match at Old Trafford, concluding around 6:30 pm, Onana faces a rapid turnaround as he embarks on a 4,800-mile journey to Yamoussoukro for Cameroon’s AFCON opener at 5 pm GMT on Monday.
Cameroon plans to have Onana on the bench for the Group C clash, and Fabrice Ondoa, his distant cousin playing in the French third division, is expected to be the starting goalkeeper. Rigobert Song manages the Cameroon squad, which competes against Guinea, Senegal, and Gambia in the group.
If Cameroon advances to the final on February 11, Onana might be absent for up to four matches, including fixtures against Wolves, West Ham, and Aston Villa. Despite concerns about losing his place to Altay Bayindir, Onana, following FIFA rules, had no choice but to respond to his country’s call-up, although there are lingering issues with Cameroon football federation president Samuel Eto’o dating back to Onana’s expulsion from the country’s World Cup camp in November 2022.
