Chelsea has initiated contact with Sporting CP as they explore the possibility of securing defender Ousmane Diomande, signaling their intent to reinforce their central defensive options in the ongoing transfer window.
The Blues have identified the 20-year-old as a key transfer target, as revealed by The Standard, aligning with their internal discussions about fortifying their squad with a striker. An initial inquiry for Diomande was made by Chelsea, but Sporting swiftly rebuffed the approach, insisting on the player’s release clause, which stands at £69 million (€80 million).
Despite the presence of central defenders like Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, and Thiago Silva in the squad, Chelsea is keen on acquiring another young talent in the central defensive position. Chalobah, considered surplus in January, could be sold to generate funds for new acquisitions. Additionally, Silva might depart when his contract expires this summer, and Fofana is sidelined due to a long-term knee injury.
The attacking front is also on Chelsea’s radar, with Sporting’s Vitor Gyokeres, a striker, drawing interest. The former Brighton and Coventry City target man has impressed with 17 goals and 8 assists in 20 games during his debut season with the Portuguese side. However, Sporting remains adamant about Gyokeres, emphasizing that any potential suitors must meet his release clause of £87 million (€100 million).
After securing a Carabao Cup final victory against Newcastle United on penalties, Chelsea, currently navigating a challenging period, aims to maintain their momentum as they face Wolves on Sunday, December 24.
