On the official Liverpool FC website, Jurgen Klopp has declared his decision to step down as the head coach of the team at the end of the 2023/24 season. Klopp revealed that this decision was reached after discussions with Liverpool’s leadership regarding his desire to leave the coaching position at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
“I know it will be a shock to many at this time when you hear it for the first time, but now I can explain. I love everything about Liverpool, but the reason I make this decision is to show you that I have to do it. It’s all on me; I am drained. Now I have no problem, obviously, I have known for a long time that I would have to announce my departure at some point, but now I am completely okay. I know I can’t do the coaching job anymore.”
“I told the club in November. Since we sat down to talk about potential contracts, the next training plans, and how far the team could go, that thought suddenly appeared. That ‘I’m not sure I’ll be here anymore,’ and I myself was surprised by that. Obviously, I began to think about it.”
“It didn’t start then, but of course, the previous season was an extremely difficult one. If at other clubs, the decision might be, ‘Well, thank you very much for everything, but maybe we should part ways here or end it here.’ But that clearly didn’t happen at Liverpool.”
“For me, the fact that I could help bring this team back to prominence is extremely wonderful, very important. That’s all I’m thinking about. When I realized quite early that I had to leave, Liverpool was still a great club with great potential and many outstanding individuals. I just started thinking about myself. Although leaving is not what I want, I think it’s the right thing 100%.”
Assistant coaches Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, as well as development coach Vitor Matos, will also leave their positions at the end of the season. Pep Lijnders intends to pursue his own coaching career.
Therefore, Jurgen Klopp will depart Liverpool after 8 and a half years of association. During this period, he orchestrated a revolution, returning the club to a dominant force in both England and Europe. Under Klopp’s leadership, Liverpool won every trophy they contested, including the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Super Cup, as well as the FA Community Shield.
