Hansi Flick Seeks Return to Management Amid Liverpool’s Search for Jurgen Klopp’s Replacement

Former Germany manager Hansi Flick is eager to make a comeback in football management and has made changes to his representation to facilitate that goal. Flick has been without a job since his dismissal as Germany’s manager following a damaging 4-1 defeat to Japan in September. The 58-year-old previously had a successful stint at Bayern Munich from 2019 to 2021 and now has the desire to return to club management.

Timing seems to be in Flick’s favor as two high-profile managerial positions will be available in the summer. Liverpool is on the lookout for a new manager for the first time since late 2015, as Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to step down at the end of the season. Additionally, Barcelona needs to find a successor to Xavi Hernandez.

According to a report from Sky Sports Germany, Flick is being considered for the Barcelona job and has received inquiries from the Premier League in recent weeks. After taking time to rejuvenate himself following the challenging end to his tenure with Germany, Flick is ready to dive back into management as soon as possible. To facilitate his return, Flick has changed agents and enlisted the services of Pini Zahavi and his Gol International agency. While Liverpool and Barcelona actively search for new managers, Flick is also keeping a close eye on his former club Bayern Munich, where Thomas Tuchel is currently under significant pressure.

Bayern Munich currently sits five points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga after a 3-0 defeat to Xabi Alonso’s team. Speculation has linked Jose Mourinho to Tuchel’s position, and Flick, with his deep connections to Bayern Munich as former assistant to Nico Kovac and manager, is closely monitoring the situation. During his tenure at Bayern Munich, Flick achieved an impressive seven titles in just 19 months, including a treble. However, his time with the German national team did not go as planned, culminating in an early exit from the group stages of the Qatar World Cup and a record of only four wins in his last 16 matches before being sacked last year.

While it remains to be seen if Flick is of interest to Liverpool, the club’s hierarchy is certainly aware of his accomplishments. Liverpool is expected to employ a data-driven approach to selecting Klopp’s successor, and although Xabi Alonso is currently the favorite, they may need to explore other options. Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, is highly confident that Alonso will stay beyond the summer.

Liverpool’s chief executive, Billy Hogan, commented on their decision-making process, stating, “The way we operate as a football club is to make sure we look at all the information and all the data, we’ve done our proper due diligence and then make a decision and have an announcement at that time. I can’t commit to a timeline on it. It will go on in the background, and we will ensure we are doing everything possible to make sure we make the right decision for the future of this football club.”
