Dutch football star Virgil van Dijk took the opportunity during the Christmas season to express his gratitude and reflect on his journey. While his family and friends in Holland gathered for festive celebrations, van Dijk spent the holiday season in Glasgow, using the time to preach and give thanks to God.
The Liverpool defender thanked God for the blessings in his life, including the opportunity to pursue a career as a professional football player. Despite being only 22 years old, van Dijk displayed remarkable maturity by recognizing and counting his blessings, even in the face of adversity.
Six years ago, van Dijk’s future in football seemed uncertain as Willem II was on the verge of selling him due to concerns about his size and lack of speed. However, after a three-year hiatus, he made a triumphant return to work at Groningen, having shed significant weight and recovered from a severe intestinal ailment that had hospitalized him for 12 days. A visible scar remains on his lower abdomen as a reminder of his journey.
Having experienced a health scare early in his career, van Dijk now values every moment and is grateful for the life he leads. He spent New Year’s Eve in church, saying prayers for his loved ones and expressing his appreciation for their support.
Van Dijk’s journey has been marked by resilience and determination. He revealed the scars on his abdomen, explaining that an operation had been attempted but ultimately failed. The subsequent surgery was described as remarkable, as it addressed an abscess that had filled his abdomen, causing significant illness. Van Dijk lost nearly 15 kilograms (33 pounds) due to the ordeal, and he spent a week in the hospital due to its severity. The experience left him grateful that the situation did not escalate further.
Reflecting on his past, van Dijk acknowledged that he had drifted away from attending church as he grew older. However, he found solace and strength in prayer, especially during challenging times.
