Manchester United fans have spotted an incredible similarity between Kobbie Mainoo’s strike against Liverpool and a goal scored by the Red Devils in 2009.
With the scores level at 1-1 after goals from Luis Diaz and Bruno Fernandes, up stepped Mainoo.
The 18-year-old picked the ball up on the half-turn, before firing Man United into the lead at Old Trafford.
As fans lauded the youngster for his impressive goal on social media, they also noticed a remarkable parallel with a goal scored at Old Trafford in 2009. The similarities between the goals extend beyond the on-pitch action, with supporters even observing similarities in the advertising boards during both goals.

His goal showed many similarities to that of Federico Macheda’s strike against Aston Villa
Even though the visitors were dominating, Mainoo managed to give Erik ten Hag’s side the lead with his excellent strike in the second half. Following the goal, Manchester United fans flooded social media platforms to draw comparisons with a previous goal.
‘Who did it better? Federico Macheda? Or Mainoo?’ asked one supporter.
The fan was alluding to a goal scored by the Italian youngster in 2009. In that match, he received a pass from Ryan Giggs, executed a remarkable turn inside the box, and scored a stunning off-balance shot into the top corner, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory for United against Aston Villa.
‘Reminiscent of Macheda, just wild’, said another fan.
Yet, it wasn’t solely the goal that evoked memories of Macheda’s strike for fans.
A vigilant supporter noticed that the identical advertisement was displayed on the boards around Old Trafford, 15 years later.
During Mainoo’s goal, the ‘Betfred’ ad with the same logo and color scheme was visible around the pitch, reminiscent of the ad seen during Macheda’s strike.
‘The betfred ad is a crazy parallel,’ said one fan.
While the action on-the-pitch reminded fans of the goal from 15 years ago, it’s an incredible coincidence that the board was showing the same thing all these years later.
