Raphael Varane could leave Manchester United this summer.
Manchester United’s aspirations for a top-four finish this season suffered another setback following a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Mohamed Salah’s late penalty secured a point for Liverpool after United had staged a comeback with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. Luis Diaz had given the visitors a halftime lead.
Subsequently, Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest later in the day propelled them to fourth place, edging past Aston Villa on goal difference. United now find themselves trailing both teams by 11 points.
This situation puts their Champions League qualification hopes for next season in serious jeopardy as the number of matches left dwindles. Erik ten Hag’s squad has only managed to win one of their last six Premier League matches.
The pressure continues to mount on the United manager, who has witnessed his team relinquish leads in each of their last three matches. Speculation regarding his future at Old Trafford is intensifying as the summer approaches.
United ‘set’ to sanction Varane exit
According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United are reportedly planning to permit Raphael Varane to depart the club on a free transfer this summer.
Allegedly, the club’s leadership has engaged in new discussions with Varane, whose contract expires at the end of the season. The Frenchman has been eligible to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club since January.
Varane arrived at United from Real Madrid in August 2021 and has accumulated a total of 93 appearances for the team.
Casemiro addresses United struggles
Casemiro, the midfielder for United, revealed that the team’s difficulties this season have caused him sleepless nights.
The 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Old Trafford yesterday has practically dashed United’s chances of securing Champions League qualification. They currently trail both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa by 11 points.Speaking to ESPN Brazil, Casemiro said:
“It’s difficult. This is the point that bothers me most about not fighting for titles. Being 20 points behind first place. Sometimes, I can’t even sleep to try to think about doing something different. It’s reality. There’s no point in thinking about title or Champions League places, we need to think about today’s games.”
