On Saturday, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Lodolo, a promising youngster, makes his long-awaited return. On Saturday, the Cincinnati Reds activated left-handed pitcher Nick Lodolo from the injured list, thereby preparing him to make his MLB debut after an absence of almost a year.
Saturday morning, the Cincinnati Reds announced that left-handed pitcher Nick Lodolo has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list.
On Saturday, Lodolo will start in relief for the Cincinnati Reds against the Chicago White Sox. To accommodate the left-handed pitcher’s inclusion on the major league roster, Cincinnati elected to option right-handed pitcher Carson Spiers to Triple-A Louisville.
Lodolo has not made a Major League Baseball appearance since May 6, 2023, when he received a diagnosis of left calf tendinosis. Ultimately, a stress reaction in Lodolo’s tibia was identified via MRI; as a result, he was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Despite making some rehab starts in the minor leagues and making progress in his rehabilitation throughout the summer, Lodolo ultimately suffered a setback in 2023 and did not resume pitching.
Although Lodolo resumed his Cactus League duties during Spring Training, he began 2024 on the injured list. His rehabilitation proceeded more seamlessly on his second attempt, and two weeks into the season, he received clearance to rejoin the roster.
In 19 starts for the Major League Baseball organization in 2022, Lodolo recorded a 4-7 record with a 3.66 ERA, 1.248 WHIP, 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings, and 2.5 WAR. Voting sixth for NL Rookie of the Year, he became an integral member of Cincinnati’s rotation heading into 2023.
Lodolo appeared in all three of his starts as the developmentally capable young pitcher that he was during the previous campaign. As of April 17, 2023, he had a 2-0 record, a 2.12 ERA, and 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
However, in his following four starts, which consisted of a 0-1 record and a 10.38 ERA, Lodolo was unable to overcome the lackluster performances caused by his leg injury.
Twelve months later, Lodolo is once again presented with an opportunity to regain momentum. In fact, the 26-year-old southpaw was a first-round selection and one of the top-50 prospects in baseball at one point.
The Red Sox host the White Sox in an afternoon contest on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. ET. Since making his Major League Baseball debut on Opening Day, Garrett Crochet has been one of the most impressive rookie pitchers in baseball this season. Garrett Crochet will face Lodolo.
