Liverpool trailed Barcelona by three goals in the first leg of the 2019 Champions League semi-final, but they staged one of the greatest comebacks in Europe by overturning the deficit to knock out Barcelona in the second leg at Anfield. Now, Jurgen Klopp wants his team to replicate that miracle in Italy against Atalanta.

Jurgen Klopp has told his Liverpool players, “fail in the most beautiful way” if they cannot complete the seemingly impossible task in the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Atalanta away tomorrow morning at 2 a.m.

Liverpool unexpectedly lost 0-3 to Atalanta in the first leg right at Anfield. In history, Liverpool has never overturned a first-leg home defeat in European competition, as reported by the Mirror (UK).

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool needs to level the three-goal deficit against Atalanta in the Europa League.

Liverpool created a historic match by defeating Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield in the Champions League semi-final in May 2019 after losing 0-3 at Camp Nou. And Jurgen Klopp urges his players to do something similar, despite Liverpool playing away this time, not at home.

In the pre-match press conference, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: “I remember that I said if we fail, then fail in the most beautiful way and that’s how I see it. We want to win the game and if you want to win a game, you have to play well. If we play well, then we have a chance to win and we’ll see.

“I said after the game, everyone in the stadium, the Liverpool supporters and the Atalanta supporters, probably thought the same. Now, a week later, I don’t think everyone thinks it’s decided. We are here and we can play good. We can play not-so-good as well, so let’s see what we’ll see tomorrow.”

Jurgen Klopp responded when asked by the media about the similarities to the match where Liverpool defeated Barcelona five years ago. “What is similar?” Jurgen Klopp said, “The result is for sure, but the performance on the pitch not really. We played at Barcelona and they were outstanding, but we lost 0-3 and nobody knew what to do. Now, we lose at home and have to play away, so that’s a big difference. It’s not a comparison.”

Klopp said that if Liverpool were to lose, they should lose in a beautiful manner.

Liverpool have a glimmer of hope as Klopp’s team secured a 5-0 victory over Atalanta in their most recent away match in November 2020, with Diogo Jota scoring a hat-trick in a game played without spectators in the Champions League.

Atalanta is not considered one of the heavyweights in European competition, currently sitting sixth in Serie A, with only three wins in their last 11 matches. Alisson played in Liverpool’s remarkable victory over Barcelona, but the Brazilian goalkeeper emphasized that there are “more differences than similarities” in that crazy night.

Liverpool once staged a legendary comeback against Barcelona that left Lionel Messi “speechless.”

Goalkeeper Alisson of Liverpool shares: “There isn’t too much difference when it comes to the result. But now, we will play the second leg away from home. That night (Liverpool’s win over Barca), we played at home. Different players, different competition.

There are more differences than similarities. It’s a completely different situation, and we have to deal with it. We have done great things in the past and great things in the history of football. Many teams have overcome poor results and turned the tide to advance to the next round.

We have to believe in ourselves. Liverpool comes here with the goal of improving performance, trying to play better and trying to avoid mistakes. Losing 0-3 at home is something we cannot accept as Liverpool players. We have to improve our performance.

We have to go back to keeping clean sheets and scoring from the clear chances we have in front of the goal. I trust my forwards and defenders. If we can do that as a team, Liverpool can return to winning ways.”
