Striker Darwin Nunez was told by coach Jurgen Klopp to shut up after he repeatedly complained about the referee following Liverpool’s 2-0 loss to Everton.
Nunez played the full 90 minutes as the Reds suffered a 2-0 defeat to Everton. This loss further dims Liverpool’s hopes of clinching the Premier League title. Currently, Liverpool trails league leaders Arsenal by 3 points in the Premier League standings. They are ahead of Man City by 1 point, but the defending champions have two games in hand.
Nunez himself had a dismal night, missing several clear opportunities, losing all 5 of his duals, and touching the ball only 19 times, the lowest among any player in Liverpool’s starting lineup.
His disappointment escalated as referee Andy Madley blew the final whistle. Everton players celebrated with the fans as the match concluded, while most of Liverpool’s stars appeared dejected. However, Nunez seemed agitated and began to complain to Klopp about something.
Klopp asked Nunez to shut up and stop criticizing the referee
Nunez was seen talking and gesturing towards referee Madley, seemingly implying he was the reason for his team’s disappointing performance. However, Klopp paid no attention to Nunez’s complaints and gestured to the Uruguayan player to keep quiet.
Despite scoring 18 goals across all competitions, Nunez has yet to justify the club’s record transfer fee. After the clash with Klopp and a dismal display against Everton, former defender Jamie Carragher believes it may be time for Liverpool to offload the 24-year-old player in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Carragher told Sky Sports, “The chance Nunez missed just before halftime is unforgivable at this level. I think after two years at the club, he’s contributed next to nothing. I don’t think he can help Liverpool win the biggest titles. Perhaps it’s time to make a decision to sell him in the summer.”
