Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes that his former team would benefit if they sold Mohamed Salah this summer, especially if he is interested in moving to the Saudi Pro League.
Salah has been in poor form in recent weeks, scoring only one goal in his last six appearances in the Premier League. This goal came from a penalty kick in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
The 31-year-old star has also found himself on the bench for the second time in three games on the night of April 27, as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by hosts West Ham United at London Stadium. It’s worth noting that Salah appeared visibly frustrated when brought on as a late substitute in the 79th minute. He showed angry reactions towards Jurgen Klopp’s instructions on the sideline just a few minutes later.
Expert Souness believes that Salah is indeed a future issue for Feyenoord coach Arne Slot. This Dutch coach is set to replace Klopp as Liverpool’s head coach at the end of the season.
“He (Slot) will also come to a situation that I think is similar to Klopp’s situation with Salah. I said that when Klopp announced his departure. But recently, Liverpool has shown weakness and vulnerability. The season has become dull, and the title is no longer within reach. Liverpool can no longer rely on Salah.”
Graeme Souness believes that Salah is a problem for Liverpool.
Souness further analyzes: “Nobody expected Liverpool to decline so badly. From a team I believed would win, with players who didn’t need to play their best to win because of the firepower, it has become a team struggling to score goals. Slot will also face difficulties like Klopp is facing now if it’s not resolved soon. The problem lies with Salah. He has dropped off from what people know. Salah has lost focus, for some reason, in the latter part of the season.”
The former Liverpool player continues: “Will Liverpool sell Salah this summer? I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a deal for Salah to move to Saudi Arabia. If he’s unsettled, it’s best for Salah to leave. I’m sure a new manager would agree. Slot will have too much to do without worrying about Salah’s distractions. I think Liverpool would benefit greatly from selling Salah.”
Moreover, after the match, Salah also spoke to the media and hinted at a conflict with the manager. He said: “If I say what happened, the house will surely burn down.”

Meanwhile, Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia has shown interest in signing Salah last summer, even offering £150 million to Liverpool, but it was rejected. With only one season left on his contract, it will be interesting to see if the “Egyptian King” will stay at Anfield for the 2024-2025 season or not.
Liverpool’s downward trend continues as they were held to a 2-2 draw by West Ham United. Salah was substituted in the 79th minute, replacing Luis Diaz, alongside Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez as The Reds sought a late goal. However, the 31-year-old star couldn’t provide much for the attack, touching the ball only 12 times.
The most notable impact of Salah was his sideline argument with Coach Jurgen Klopp. But despite his recent dip in form, Salah still had a good season so far. He has scored 24 goals and provided 13 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions. Salah will continue to feature for The Reds in the match against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on May 5th.
