With Jurgen Klopp’s era at Liverpool coming to an end, a major overhaul is set to take place at The Kop with up to 5 players leaving Liverpool alongside Klopp.
Liverpool is edging very close to officially announcing the identity of the candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp in the managerial seat for the upcoming season. According to English media, Feyenoord’s coach, Arne Slot, has been confirmed as Klopp’s successor at Liverpool.
It’s worth noting that Liverpool has been searching for a new coach for several months after Klopp announced he would leave Anfield at the end of this season to take a break. In fact, Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim were both favored candidates to become Liverpool’s new coach. However, Liverpool ultimately sealed the deal with Slot.
In a statement to the media, Slot explained very clearly why he wants to lead Liverpool: “I’m having a great time at Feyenoord, but when a club like Liverpool comes calling, it would be crazy not to consider it an important step in my coaching career. Everyone understands Feyenoord wants the highest compensation for this. But I believe they will also allow me to maximize the opportunity. Moving to Liverpool will be a big step for me. There’s no secret that I want to go to Liverpool.”
Negotiations between Liverpool and Feyenoord have found common ground regarding compensation to terminate Arne Slot’s contract. Specifically, Liverpool will pay up to £13 million to finalize the deal. This is considered a record fee that Liverpool has paid for a manager from a Dutch club to date.
So, after 9 years leading Liverpool, the charismatic German coach, Klopp, will finally step down to make way for Arne Slot. This marks the end of Jurgen Klopp’s era at Liverpool. Naturally, after finding Klopp’s successor, Liverpool is now acting swiftly to replace players who may also depart.
Joel Matip bid farewell to Liverpool this summer
According to a recent issue of the Daily Express, a major overhaul is set to take place at The Kop with up to 5 players leaving Liverpool alongside Klopp. The first name mentioned here is Joel Matip, who joined Liverpool in 2016. Matip’s time at Anfield is running out as his contract is nearing expiration.
Another player expected to depart is goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel, who hasn’t had any playing minutes this season. Additionally, Thiago Alcantara, who was signed by Liverpool with high expectations in 2020, may not continue due to injury issues and poor form, combined with his contract nearing its end with the Merseyside club.
In addition to the players whose contracts are expiring, Nathaniel Phillips and Caoimhin Kelleher are also set to leave. Both are believed to be seeking starting opportunities elsewhere. The departure of these players will somewhat disrupt Liverpool. In other words, Liverpool will face challenges in rebuilding their squad while adapting to a new manager post-Klopp.
