Championship 2023/24 ends with 3 relegation spots for Birmingham, Huddersfield and Rotherham. The victory in the final round against Norwich was not enough to help Birmingham overcome Plymouth in the relegation race.
Angry Birmingham fans stormed the field after their home team was relegated. In October 2023, this club was still ranked 6th and had a chance to enter the Premier League promotion play-off group.
However, Birmingham’s board of directors made a shocking decision to fire coach John Eustace to appoint a more reputable strategist, Wayne Rooney, who has just terminated his contract with DC United.
In just a short time, Rooney and Birmingham slid down the rankings. By January 2024, Birmingham was only a few points ahead of the “holding the red light” group. At this time, “The Blues” Board of Directors decided to fire Rooney.
Birmingham appointed Tony Mowbray but he also had to withdraw due to poor health. Gary Rowett, the interim coach, was unable to help the St Andrew’s team overcome the crisis.
Birmingham fans were so angry with a series of wrong decisions by the owners that they rushed down and brawled with stadium security forces on relegation day.
This is the first time in 32 years that Birmingham has dropped down to play in England’s League 1. The last time the club featured in the Premier League was in the 2010/11 season. Despite relegation that season, “The Blues” still qualified for the Europa League in 2011/12 due to their League Cup championship.
More ironically, coach John Eustace, who was fired by Birmingham, helped Blackburn Rovers overcome his old team to successfully stay relegated.
