Jurgen Klopp revealed that the chaos in Liverpool’s dressing room spurred the team’s comeback and brought about an important victory against Aston Villa in the 2019/20 season.
On the evening of May 13, Liverpool will visit Aston Villa’s Villa Park in the framework of the 37th round of the 2023/24 Premier League.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the German coach made an interesting revelation related to the altercation between Liverpool players in the dressing room, which was a memorable moment during his time at The Kop, the season when the Anfield team won the Premier League title.
Liverpool bounced back after the altercation to score two late goals, with strikes from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane, thereby overturning the game and securing a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in November 2019. The Kop defeated Manchester City in the following Premier League match the following weekend to extend their lead over Pep Guardiola’s side to 9 points, then cruised to the title.
“In that game, we won 2-1, and in the first half, there was a bit of an incident in the dressing room,” he smiled. “There was a bit of a disagreement between players, actually two. But you won’t get the names from me!
“It’s no big deal; it was just a situation. It was a way to turn the situation around. That group of players is truly special. We could calm down and then we turned the game around, which was really special.”
Klopp’s last away trip will be a fateful match with Unai Emery.
“That’s when you give it your all, everything’s on the line, these kinds of things can happen. As long as we deal with it as quickly as possible, we turned the game around with two really special goals, especially Sadio’s header. We really wanted it, the boys really wanted it. It was a really important game, and it’s a great feeling after the match.”
Villa Park is the fitting venue for this 238th away game, also Klopp’s last in charge of Liverpool.
Notably, Villa Park is where The Kop has secured more victories than any other stadium in the Premier League. Unai Emery is also a fitting opponent; Klopp first encountered the Spanish coach 12 years ago when he was managing Spartak Moscow.
Emery defeated Klopp in the 2016 Europa League final with Sevilla, Emery’s only victory in 10 encounters. However, Klopp still had high praise for the Basque strategist: “Unai Emery is one of the best in the business, 100%,” Klopp said.
