At 34, Thomas Muller is not only one of the oldest players in the German squad for Euro 2024, but the Bayern Munich player is also one of the most experienced stars in Julian Nagelsmann’s lineup.

During a press conference announcing Germany’s preliminary squad for Euro 2024, coach Nagelsmann revealed Muller’s role for the upcoming tournament in June.

According to the German coach, Muller will play a crucial role both on and off the field at this Euro:

“Muller is a bridge to the fans, the media, and the team. He is, of course, an extension of the coaching staff. This guy has a big-picture perspective and has sent me some very funny messages.”

“Thomas Muller connects many important figures and serves as a link in addition to his athletic qualities. I am very much looking forward to Muller,” Nagelsmann said during the squad announcement in Berlin.

With players like Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, and Kai Havertz, coach Nagelsmann has many options for the attacking midfield position. The 36-year-old strategist did not hide the fact that Muller will have to take on a representative role at Euro 2024:

“Muller is likely to come off the bench. He doesn’t need much time to get going; Muller always has those special actions and moments, just like when he was 16.”

Thomas Muller has played 128 international matches for the German national team since 2010. At least three more matches could be added during Euro 2024 on home soil.

Although this is the preliminary list, the reality is that coach Nagelsmann will have to cut one more player before Euro 2024 officially begins, as he has called up 27 players—one more than UEFA’s regulations allow.
