During his tenure at Anfield, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp held a strong admiration for Jarrod Bowen. The talented player from West Ham is now reportedly a target for a significant transfer in the upcoming summer.
During his time as Liverpool manager, Jürgen Klopp often spoke highly of players from opposing teams, but few received the same level of praise as West Ham star Jarrod Bowen.
The 27-year-old has established himself as one of the top forwards in the Premier League in recent seasons, showcasing his talent by scoring an impressive 20 goals across all competitions this season. His outstanding performance has rightfully earned him a spot in the provisional England squad for Euro 2024.
Klopp’s admiration for Bowen dates back some time, and he expressed his fondness for the player during an interview with Sky Sports last season, stating, “I have to admit he’s probably my favorite player aside from the ones I currently manage. It’s remarkable to see his progress and development.”
Klopp’s commendation hinted at a potential future transfer move from Liverpool, amid speculations that Jarrod Bowen could serve as a replacement for Mohamed Salah when the time comes for the latter to depart. Salah’s contract with Liverpool is set to expire in 2025, and there is anticipated interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League this summer.
However, Liverpool’s current plans for the upcoming season include Salah, with manager Arne Slot considering him a crucial component of his strategy moving forward. Slot places great importance on his wide players, and it’s reported by The Athletic that Liverpool is eyeing a winger in their summer transfer wishlist.
Yet, both Bowen and Salah excel when cutting in from the right flank, raising doubts about how both could fit into the same lineup. Consequently, any potential addition might lean towards the opposite flank, as Liverpool’s competitors are reportedly eager to seize the opportunity.
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle has identified Bowen as a top priority this summer, having shown interest in the past. While West Ham rejected previous inquiries, Bowen might be tempted to move following the departure of David Moyes.
Newcastle’s pursuit of Bowen dates back to his time at Hull, but financial constraints prevented a deal. A transfer this summer is expected to command a fee of around $76 million (£60m/€70m) following Bowen’s long-term contract extension last year.
The report suggests that Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, another candidate potentially filling Salah’s position on Liverpool’s right flank, is also being considered by Newcastle, along with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
With Eddie Howe eager to reinforce Newcastle’s squad for a renewed push towards European football and a top-four finish, Klopp’s admiration notwithstanding, a move to Anfield for Bowen seems unlikely unless Liverpool acts swiftly.
