Trent Alexander-Arnold has hinted at his future with Liverpool following Arne Slot’s appointment as the Reds’ new head coach.
The Liverpool vice-captain’s contract expires in the summer of 2025, and there are rumors of interest from Real Madrid. However, with Slot, sporting director Richard Hughes, and FSG CEO of Football Michael Edwards only officially starting their new roles on June 1, the 25-year-old is still awaiting any resolution regarding his future.
As a lifelong Liverpool supporter, it would be unexpected if Alexander-Arnold decided to leave Anfield. However, with just one year left on his current contract, uncertainty remains about his future.
It appears highly probable that one of Hughes’ initial tasks will involve securing a new contract for the right-back at Liverpool, as the club would undoubtedly be averse to the prospect of losing Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer in a year’s time.
Although Liverpool could potentially consider selling the defender this summer if an extension seemed unlikely, Alexander-Arnold appears to have indicated his commitment to the club for at least another year.
“It was a successful season, building upon the previous one, with continued improvement as a team, challenging for the title and making significant progress,” he expressed in an interview with the club website. “Any time you see progress, it signifies a positive season. We should focus on the strengths and move forward, hopefully achieving more success next season.”
In his inaugural season as Liverpool’s vice-captain, the team secured the League Cup after defeating Chelsea at Wembley in February. Unfortunately, the defender missed the game due to injury.
Upon his return, Liverpool’s season began to falter, resulting in early exits from both the Europa League and FA Cup, and their Premier League title aspirations losing momentum.
However, despite describing Jurgen Klopp’s final season with the club as a ‘successful season’, Alexander-Arnold clearly aims to continue progressing under Slot in the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.
The English international is not the sole player to publicly pledge his allegiance to Liverpool for another season, as Mohamed Salah did likewise last week ahead of his own contract expiration next summer.
Following Slot’s confirmation as Liverpool’s new head coach, Salah posted on social media: “We understand that winning trophies is paramount, and we will do everything in our power to achieve that next season. Our supporters deserve it, and we will fight relentlessly.”
While such declarations offer limited assurance regarding the futures of Alexander-Arnold and Salah beyond the expiration of their contracts, it does indicate that Slot can anticipate the services of both players during his inaugural season in charge at Liverpool.
