Memphis Depay sported a custom headband with a striking two-word message.
He wore this headband during the Netherlands’ friendly matches against Canada and Iceland in preparation for Euro 2024. Depay continued to wear the distinctive headband in the Netherlands’ Euros opener against Poland on Sunday.
Dutch media criticized his choice of headwear, condemning the star forward’s attire. However, the former Manchester United player explained that he chose to wear the headband because it helped him manage his sweat and mentioned that his girlfriend liked the accessory.
“The previous match I made 20 minutes of time for the press in the mixed zone, and I haven’t had any questions about it,” the 30-year-old said after the Iceland game.
“Who cares? It looks great on me and helps me sweat. My girlfriend likes that sweatband. Amazing, right?
“It’s a new look and I feel good about it. I’m already thinking about what colour I’m going to wear in Germany.”
Depay’s bullish response to the criticism has inspired him to have the words ‘who cares’ on his headband. An image of his headband during Netherlands’ clash against Poland emerged online, revealing the ice-cold message.
In the Group D clash, the Netherlands rallied to secure a 2-1 victory over Poland in Hamburg.
Adam Buksa scored first in the 16th minute, but Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo equalized in the 29th minute. Former Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst, who came on in the second half, clinched the win with a late goal from inside the box.
Ronald Koeman’s team will continue their Euro 2024 campaign next Friday against France, one of the tournament favorites.
