L’Equipe delivered some harsh ratings for the France team despite Kylian Mbappe and his teammates reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
Les Bleus advanced past Portugal in a lackluster quarter-final that ended goalless after 120 minutes, requiring penalties to decide the winner.
Joao Felix’s missed penalty sent the two-time champions through to the last four, leaving Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe devastated on the field after their elimination was confirmed.
Although France celebrated, they faced criticism for their performance, having yet to score a goal from open play and netting only three times in five matches in Germany.
French publication L’Equipe was among the critics, handing out some low scores in their match ratings, with the harshest rating given to captain and star forward Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe, who was substituted at the half-way point of extra time, struggled throughout the game and has scored just once in the competition so far, coming from the penalty spot against Poland in the group stage.
His performances at the Euros have faced criticism, and L’Equipe gave the 25-year-old a score of just two out of ten.
“While he is supposed to add speed to the game, he slowed it down,” the analysis read. “He wasn’t served well, but it’s also difficult to find him since he no longer puts his head into the game and avoids duels.
“Apart from a blocked shot (67th minute) and another weak attempt (90+3 minutes), his performance was poor.”
The criticism extended to Antoine Griezmann, who received a harsh score of three out of ten. Griezmann, who vied with Mbappe for the French captaincy after Hugo Lloris stepped down, started in the No. 10 role behind Mbappe and Randal Kolo Muani but was substituted after 67 minutes for Ousmane Dembele.
