Harry Kane tells England they owe Gareth Southgate in his 100th game in charge… with Bukayo Saka and Kieran Trippier set to start as wing backs in quarter-final against Switzerland

Harry Kane believes England owe manager Gareth Southgate a strong performance in Saturday’s crucial Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland.

Southgate, who is considering using forward Bukayo Saka as a wing-back and possibly switching to a three-at-the-back formation, will be managing England for the 100th time but faces criticism after four lackluster performances.

Captain Kane has issued a rallying cry, stating, “I know the boss will sometimes face criticism. But ultimately, it’s us on the pitch who need to make the difference in vital moments.

“We feel the coach has given us so much and has been one of the most successful managers in England’s history. So we need to go out there and repay him.

“It’s an incredible achievement for Southgate to reach 100 games. As for doing something for him, I think all he will want is a win, so hopefully we can achieve that and give him the best present possible.”

Southgate looks set to gamble on a change of system in his efforts to reach a third major tournament semi-final in charge of the national team.

England have started all four of their matches in Germany with a conventional four-man defense, but as Mail Sport revealed on Wednesday, Southgate is ready to switch to a three-at-the-back formation against Switzerland.

Saka, who has been predominantly used as a right winger during the tournament, is expected to take on a deeper wide role.

This tactical change also allows for the possibility of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden being deployed as advanced central midfielders behind lone striker Harry Kane.

Kobbie Mainoo is hopeful of retaining his spot alongside Declan Rice in the deeper central midfield roles, while Kieran Trippier is likely to keep his place on the opposite flank to Saka.

Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Ezri Konsa are set to form England’s back three. Centre-back Marc Guehi, who has started all four of England’s games in Germany, is suspended.

As reported on Friday, Luke Shaw is finally ready to participate in the tournament after missing the first four matches due to a hamstring problem that has sidelined him for 140 days.

England have produced four lacklustre performances under Southgate during Euro 2024

“There have been some difficult days for him on his own over the past few weeks, but I’m really pleased that he’s now an option for us,” confirmed the England boss.

“We’re not concerned about him breaking down, but there’s obviously a decision regarding match sharpness and how quickly he can adjust back to the intensity of the tournament environment.”
