Spain have officially been crowned EURO 2024 champions after an emotional victory over England in the final.
In the early morning of July 17 (Vietnam time), the EURO 2024 final took place with Spain facing off against England.
Reflecting the match’s significance, both teams played very cautiously and engaged in intense physical duels. Despite Spain’s superior ball control due to their strong midfield, they found it difficult to breach the Three Lions’ defense.
Gareth Southgate’s squad, on the other hand, played defensively but still managed to create scoring opportunities.
A pivotal moment in the first half occurred in the 45th minute when Phil Foden’s shot was on target, only to be saved by Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon.
After halftime, Spain unexpectedly took the lead in the 47th minute. Yamal dribbled centrally and passed to Nico Williams on the left wing, who then scored with a precise shot, breaking the deadlock.
In response, England intensified their efforts to equalize, putting continuous pressure on Spain.
In the 73rd minute, England’s attack paid off. Bellingham set up Cole Palmer, who curled the ball from outside the penalty area with his left foot, beating Unai Simon and leveling the score at 1-1.
With the score tied, the match pace quickened. Spain, however, maintained their dominance in ball control and penetration.
In the 86th minute, Cucurella sprinted up the left wing and crossed to Mikel Oyarzabal, who tapped in from close range, scoring Spain’s second goal.
With little time remaining, Southgate’s team couldn’t turn the game around. Ultimately, Spain defeated England 2-1 in 90 minutes, securing their fourth EURO championship, a record for the tournament.
