Chelsea have been trying to find a new striker to lead coach Enzo Maresca’s attack, but so far things have not been positive.
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has been on the Blues’ radar for months, with journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming the Italian side would let him go if they received a suitable offer. Meanwhile, Chelsea are willing to let Romelu Lukaku go the other way to Napoli, in a bid to reduce the fee.
Victor Osimhen is a quality addition, but comes at a high price, and with his wages high, transfer expert Romano has revealed the 25-year-old is unwilling to take a cut from his £200,000-a-week earnings.
However, despite the Osimhen news, the Stamford Bridge outfit could sign another talent. Jonathan David, who has been linked with Chelsea, is cheaper than Osimhen and scored more goals than the Nigerian last season.
The Canada international scored 19 goals in Ligue 1 and 26 in all competitions last season – far ahead of Osimhen’s tally of 17 – but could be available for just £20m with his contract set to expire in just 12 months.
Chelsea are one of a number of Premier League clubs interested in the 24-year-old, and with his proven talent, David could become a key player for Maresca in the 2024/25 season, and could also save the club a significant amount of money.
David is the perfect choice for Chelsea.
Besides Osimhen, Chelsea also have Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres in their sights. But David is still a more worthy option for them to consider.
Gyokeres scored 39 goals in 33 appearances in the Portuguese top flight during the 2023/24 campaign, but he would cost any team interested in signing the Swede at least £86m.
When comparing Gyokeres to David, the Lille striker is more complete, good at building play and linking up the attack, making him perfect for Maresca’s possession-based system at Stamford Bridge.
Compare David and Gyokeres.
Both averaged 0.22 goals per shot last season, although Gyokeres scored 10 more than David. However, when in possession, the Canadian did more. He completed 2.7 progressive passes per 90 minutes, with a 10% higher pass completion rate.
David has shown consistency, scoring over 20 goals in his last four Ligue 1 campaigns, while Gyokeres has previously only played in England’s second tier with Coventry City.
When comparing the transfer fees and stats of the three strikers above, it is clear that the Blues would be much better off making a move for the Lille striker. His all-round ability and £20m price tag make David a better buy than his two colleagues.
