The 2024/25 Premier League season is just days away and Liverpool have taken advantage of the opportunity to host two consecutive friendlies at Anfield.
Liverpool won 4-1 against Sevilla at a packed Anfield and then drew 0-0 with Las Palmas after the fans had left.
The two games at the same time give new manager Arne Slot a chance to finalise his starting line-up ahead of the season opener against Ipswich.
Alexander-Arnold changing role?
It didn’t take long for Trent Alexander-Arnold to remind everyone of his passing ability, with the England international capping off his performance with a trademark assist – a deep pass from the right flank for Diogo Jota to score the opener against Sevilla.
After a summer of debate over where Alexander-Arnold could be used, Slot’s plan appears to be for the defender to operate as a pure right-back. But he will have the freedom to move inside, rather than the inverted full-back role he occupied last season.
Jota deserves to start
Diogo Jota suffered too much pain last season. He suffered three injuries, which ruined his development and he only made 19 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions in the 2023/34 season.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker has since been a regular substitute at EURO 2024. Jota has been impressive since the start of pre-season.
Sharp, powerful and full of conviction, he has led the line brilliantly in pre-season and looks certain to start in the Premier League opener against Ipswich Town.
Important season for Diaz
Since arriving at Liverpool in January 2022, one of the question marks surrounding Luis Diaz has been his ability to contribute goals. However, Diaz has just made a strong impression, scoring twice in the first half against Sevilla.
Diaz finished last season with 13 goals and five assists in 51 games, a good return. In total, he scored 24 goals in 98 appearances. There was talk of a move away, but it seems Diaz is ready to stay and have a blast next season.
Opportunity for Harvey Elliott
Elliott was the standout performer on the US tour and his skill set is well suited to the No. 10 role in the 4-2-3-1 system that Slot has deployed him in. There were some good touches from the 21-year-old as he was at the centre of a couple of Liverpool’s chances against Las Palmas.
