“It’s the true story about me and my family’s journey and I can’t wait to share it with you,”
In the film “Giannis: The Marvellous Journey,” Antetokounmpo and his family are interviewed alongside Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith of TNT, former Bucks head coach Jason Kidd, assistant coach Vin Baker, teammate Kris Middleton, and former teammate and close friend Jrue Holiday.
Giannis Antetokounmpo and “Rise,” his Disney film
The movie “Rise” is based on the true story of the Antetokounmpo brothers, Giannis, Thanasis, and Kostas. The film was directed and produced by Disney in the year following Antetokounmpo’s championship victory. While playing with the Milwaukee Bucks and LA Lakers, these three brothers became the first players in NBA history to win three championships.
The family-friendly movie follows young Giannis and his elder brother Thanasis as they pursue their dreams of becoming professional athletes while trying to provide for their family. It also highlights the events and hardships that eventually led to Giannis being chosen for the 2013 NBA draft.
The difficulties they had in Greece and their family’s predicament with their fifth brother, who was left behind in Nigeria because his parents were unable to immigrate with a newborn, are also highlighted in the film.
On June 27, 2013, eleven years ago, the Bucks took a chance by picking the undeveloped and mysterious prospect with the 15th pick in that draft. The risk would transform the team and lead to the NBA championship in 2021.
