Cody Gakpo has recently highlighted the differences between Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, noting that Slot, the Dutch coach, is always candid and straightforward, quickly earning the affection of Liverpool players from the outset.
Gakpo expressed his satisfaction with Liverpool’s progress under Slot’s management. The new era under Slot began on a high note, with Liverpool securing a 2-0 victory over Ipswich in their Premier League opener for the 2024/25 season. Gakpo is enthusiastic about developing under his fellow countryman and acknowledges that Slot has gained the support of both the club’s fans and players.
Gakpo also compared Slot to the previous coach, Klopp. He pointed out that while many changes have occurred since Klopp’s departure, including a shift in playing style, Slot’s approach has been well-received. Slot’s promise to bring a new style of play, distinct from Klopp’s nine-year tenure, was evident both in the pre-season and the match against Ipswich.
“A lot has changed since Klopp left, but he left a strong impression. It’s not necessarily about better or worse, just different. Last season, we focused more on counter-attacking, but under Slot, we’re working to master both attacking and defending, which could be very promising for us.
Coach Slot is very honest and straightforward, which is beneficial for the players. It helps us understand where we stand. The pre-season matches have gone well, and we also won our first match against Ipswich. If we continue this way, we could have an excellent season,” said Gakpo.
After being a substitute in the win over Ipswich, Gakpo, who replaced Diogo Jota in the 79th minute, will be eager to secure a starting position for Liverpool’s upcoming game against Brentford at Anfield. The Dutch forward has made a mark at EURO 2024, scoring three goals in six matches as the Netherlands reached the semi-finals of the tournament in Germany.
