Only Arsenal and Liverpool have kept their perfect record in the Premier League, with both winning 2-0 in their opening matches. Luis Diaz opened the scoring for Anfield in the 13th minute, before Mohamed Salah sealed the victory in the second half. Arne Slot’s team are one of four teams to have won all six points from the first two rounds, alongside Man City, Brighton and Arsenal.
Brentford are renowned for their relentless counter-attacking style, but that is Liverpool’s strength and both of their goals came in that vein. Diaz’s opener came from a corner from the visitors, with Diogo Jota picking the ball up the pitch and passing it to the Colombian striker who raced down the pitch with his left foot and fired a high shot into the near corner, beating goalkeeper Mark Flekken.
Salah’s goal saw Liverpool steal the ball from midfield, before Diaz poked the ball down the right side of the penalty area for the Egyptian striker to curl his left foot into the far corner of the net. This was the 32-year-old’s second consecutive goal in the Premier League this season.
Salah continued to show his goalscoring ability, but Diaz was the highlight of the match with a goal and an assist. For the third consecutive season, Diaz has scored the first goal at Anfield. He also created four chances for his teammates, and made three successful tackles, earning a Whoscored score of 9, the highest in the match.
Slot’s first game at Anfield ended perfectly, and he was also enthusiastically cheered by the audience. When his name was introduced, the audience chanted, clapped and sang the famous cheering song You’ll Never Walk Alone .
When Slot was appointed to replace Jurgen Klopp, many fans were skeptical about the 46-year-old coach’s ability. But after the first two matches, he has more or less created trust among fans. And support for the Dutch coach will increase if Liverpool continue to win in the third round against Man Utd at Old Trafford on September 1.
