Only Arsenal and Liverpool have maintained a perfect start in the Premier League, both securing 2-0 victories in their opening matches. Luis Diaz broke the deadlock for Liverpool at Anfield in the 13th minute, with Mohamed Salah adding another goal in the second half to secure the win.
Arne Slot’s squad is among four teams, alongside Man City, Brighton, and Arsenal, to have collected all six points from the first two rounds.
Brentford is known for their fierce counter-attacking play, but Liverpool excelled in this area, with both of their goals coming from such plays. Diaz’s opening goal was the result of a counterattack that began with a corner from Brentford. Diogo Jota carried the ball upfield before passing to the Colombian forward, who sped down the pitch and struck a powerful left-footed shot into the near corner, out of reach for goalkeeper Mark Flekken.
For Salah’s goal, Liverpool won the ball in midfield, and Diaz skillfully set it up by sending the ball to the right side of the penalty area, where Salah curled a precise left-footed shot into the far corner. This marked Salah’s second consecutive Premier League goal this season.
While Salah demonstrated his usual goal-scoring prowess, it was Diaz who truly stood out with both a goal and an assist. Remarkably, this is the third consecutive season in which Diaz has scored the opening goal at Anfield. Additionally, he created four scoring opportunities for his teammates and made three successful tackles, earning him a match-high Whoscored rating of 9.
Slot’s debut at Anfield was a success, and the crowd greeted him with enthusiasm. As his name was announced, the fans erupted in cheers, applause, and sang the iconic anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Initially, some fans were doubtful when Slot was appointed to succeed Jurgen Klopp, questioning the 46-year-old manager’s capabilities. However, after just two matches, he has begun to win over the supporters. If Liverpool can continue their winning streak, particularly in the upcoming clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on September 1st, confidence in the Dutch coach is likely to grow even further.
