Trent Alexander-Arnold seemed visibly upset at full-time following Liverpool’s victory over Brentford, even though Diogo Jota tried to lift his spirits

Arne Slot played down Trent Alexander-Arnold’s visible frustration after being substituted during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brentford at Anfield, saying, “we have to take care of him.”

The Dutch manager replaced the England international after 72 minutes, bringing on Conor Bradley. Although Alexander-Arnold appeared unhappy when he took his seat on the bench, Slot attempted to speak with him.

Liverpool’s new manager later explained, “He didn’t seem too happy about being taken off. I understand—every player wants to play the full 90 minutes. But I’m sure those who started on the bench weren’t too pleased with my decision either. Trent recently returned from international duty, where he played a lot initially but then had a break. This is only his third game back.

“We need to manage his workload because we want him fit for the entire season, not just the first few games. Luckily, I have a strong backup in Conor, so we’re looking after Trent. But he played a good game.”

Goals from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah gave Slot his first win at Anfield in his debut match in charge, marking two victories in the 45-year-old’s first two games, following a 2-0 win at Ipswich Town.

Regarding his reception at Anfield, Slot remarked, “The welcome was similar to the warmth and appreciation I’ve felt from everyone around the training ground and within the club. I can’t speak for previous managers, but I believe all of them would tell you they felt the same warmth from this club. We have to strive to play in the style that this club is known for.”

Reflecting on his start with Liverpool, Slot said, “Two good wins against tough opponents—we had a strong opening game, but there’s still a lot for us to prove. Ipswich and Brentford deserve our respect.”

With Salah now scoring twice, and Díaz and Jota each finding the net once, Slot added, “It’s about ensuring that players like Lucho [Díaz], Mo [Salah], and Darwin [Núñez, a substitute against Brentford] get into attacking positions where they can showcase their quality.”

As for Ivan Toney, who was absent from Brentford’s matchday squad and is reportedly available for transfer, Thomas Frank was asked if a deal for the striker was close. The manager responded, “Good question—I haven’t asked Phil [Giles, the director of football] about it in the last two or three days. He trained well and had a good attitude.”
