Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 901st career goal to seal Portugal’s dramatic comeback against Scotland in the UEFA Nations League.
Even though Ronaldo had just become the first player ever to surpass the 900-goal milestone in a midweek match against Croatia, he started the game on the bench at Estadio da Luz.
Scotland stunned everyone by taking an early lead in the 7th minute, with Scott McTominay scoring for the visitors. Despite a relentless barrage of attacks from Portugal, Scotland managed to maintain their advantage through the first half.
However, Portugal finally equalized in the second half. Bruno Fernandes scored with a powerful long-range shot, breaking the deadlock for his team.
Portugal continued to press forward, and with just two minutes remaining, substitute Ronaldo made his mark. He tapped in his 901st goal after a series of near misses and post hits. The stadium erupted in joy, with one overzealous fan even attempting to rush the field for a selfie with the superstar.
Scott McTominay’s Goal (7th minute, Portugal 0-1 Scotland):
Scotland earned a free-kick on the left flank, and Kenny McLean delivered a precise long ball to the back post. McTominay eluded Ruben Dias, beat the offside trap, and headed the ball past Diogo Costa, marking his 10th goal in 13 international appearances.
Bruno Fernandes Scores Against Scotland (54th minute, Portugal 1-1 Scotland):
Portugal’s persistent pressure finally bore fruit. Fernandes launched a powerful shot from distance following a pass from Rafael Leao. Although Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, managed to get a hand to the ball, he could not prevent it from going into the net.
Ronaldo Hits the Post and Gunn Makes a Spectacular Save (82nd minute, Portugal 1-1 Scotland):
In the 82nd minute, Ronaldo headed a powerful shot from Fernandes that struck the post. Gunn managed to clear the ball before Joao Felix could capitalize on the rebound and made another excellent save to deny Felix’s header shortly before.
