Man City Surprisingly Halts Contract Negotiations with Phil Foden
Phil Foden is currently enjoying his best season in the colors of Manchester City, having scored 18 goals and provided 10 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.
At the age of 23, Foden has amassed a total of 258 appearances for Man City since November 2017, scoring 78 goals and providing 51 assists. He has claimed 16 club-level titles, including 5 Premier League championships and 1 Champions League trophy, playing a vital role in Man City’s historic treble-winning season.
One of Foden’s notable achievements came when he was hailed as the best player in the Premier League by manager Pep Guardiola after the recent derby against Manchester United.
In October 2022, Foden extended his contract with Man City until the summer of 2027, reportedly tripling his weekly wages to around £200,000.
Recent reports suggested that Man City had opened negotiations with Foden for a new agreement. However, according to Football Insider, the club is expected to postpone further talks until the end of the current season.
It is understood that all parties involved have confidence that a long-term deal will be reached in the summer. The only sticking point seems to be Foden’s desire for a more central role under Pep Guardiola in the upcoming phase.
Speaking to mancity.com, Foden stated, ‘These are the most consistent games I’ve played. I’ve also played in a new position, dropping deeper, having more midfielders around, and I really enjoy it.’
‘I’m enjoying the season and in good form right now, so I want to maintain that. There’s nothing better. For me, it gives me more freedom, more touches on the ball, and more involvement. I really enjoy that when I play there.’
‘I haven’t said I’m world-class, I think I have the potential, and that’s special to me,’ added Foden.
Foden is hoping to end the season on a successful note as Man City pursues another treble, while also aiming to make an impact with the England national team at Euro 2024 this summer.
