Phil Foden deserves more credit

Manchester City striker Phil Foden has made a huge impact by winning 14 trophies with his club. In a recent interview, the 23-year-old believes people don’t appreciate his achievements

Manchester City extended their dominance of European clubs in the competition with a 4-0 win over Fluminense in Jeddah on Friday, but it was their first Club World Cup win to end 2023 with five trophies.

However, some City players, such as Phil Foden, feel their efforts and achievements in recent games have not been recognised as they deserve. Foden has been blunt in saying they don’t get “enough credit” despite their huge success.

“I don’t think there’s enough praise. It’s incredibly difficult and you play every three days. So after all that effort, just saying we did it is not enough.”

The England striker has won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, two FA Cups and four League Cups with Manchester City despite his young age.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to win the Club World Cup – and we have to make sure it’s not the last. We want to build on that. Now that we’ve won it, we know how to win it and we’ll learn from it for the next time.”

“Hopefully we can continue to grow as a club and get better and better,” added Foden. “‘Starting from here’ is what we’re talking about, especially me.

“I want to win this trophy because it’s obviously not just a big competition for the club, but I think it will give us a bit of momentum going into the season. That’s what City need. Now we’ve won the trophy, hopefully it will give us more excitement and drive.”
