Striker Erling Haaland scored 27 goals in 31 matches in the 2023-2024 season, winning the Premier League top scorer award for the second time in a row.
After his first season in England, setting a record of 36 goals in 35 matches, Haaland declined but still won the award with 27 goals, five more than runner-up Cole Palmer. The Norwegian striker became the sixth player to win this award two consecutive seasons, after Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Robin van Persie, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah.
“This award is very special to me,” Haaland said. “I am proud to have contributed to the team’s championship, and to help my teammates. I also thank my teammates for helping me win this award, and am grateful to the coaching staff for their hard work. I also appreciate Thank you fans, because it always feels great to celebrate in front of you.”
Haaland scored two hat-tricks this season, against Fulham and Wolves. He also scored important goals against Liverpool, Tottenham, Man Utd and Chelsea, helping Man City win their fourth consecutive championship. The 24-year-old striker was also nominated for Best Player and Young Player of the season, but did not win the award.
Haaland’s goal scoring ability has declined this season, when his expected goals parameter is 30.94. That means a normal striker, if given opportunities like Haaland, could score about 31 goals, instead of just 27 goals.
Striker Ollie Watkins was awarded the best football player of the season, with 13 assists for Aston Villa. Goalkeeper David Raya also won the Golden Glove award, keeping 16 clean sheets for Arsenal.
In the European Golden Shoe race, Haaland has no chance, because Harry Kane is likely to receive the award with 36 goals for Bayern Munich. Kane and Kylian Mbappe also have many chances to win the Champions League top scorer, with the same eight goals. Meanwhile, Haaland only scored six goals in this tournament, despite being the top scorer last season with 12 goals.
Haaland has scored 90 goals in 96 matches in all competitions for Man City, and he can improve his performance in the FA Cup final against Man Utd at Wembley Stadium on May 25.
