Inter coach regrets not ending Man City’s unbeaten streak
After the 0-0 draw in the first round of the group stage, coach Simone Inzaghi regretted that Inter wasted the opportunity and could not become the first club to win at Man City in the Champions League since 2018.
Inter made Man City scoreless at home in the Champions League for the first time since the 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon in March 2022. “I wanted to break another milestone because they are unbeaten at home in the Champions League since 2018,” Inzaghi said with a smile after the match.
The last time Man City lost at home in the Champions League was a 1-2 defeat to Lyon in 2018. Since then, they have gone 32 matches unbeaten, including a 0-0 draw with Inter in the first round of the 2024-25 Champions League group stage.
Inter also missed another milestone. They have won at home against four English clubs in the Champions League: Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. But yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Man City meant Inter failed to win away to five English clubs, thus catching up with Real Madrid and Bayern.
At the Etihad Stadium on 18 September, Inter only had 40% possession, but shot 13 times with many clear chances. In the first half, Marcus Thuram had three shots, but twice they hit the post, while Carlos Augusto shot from a tight angle in the box in injury time, but Ederson blocked it with his foot.
Inter’s best chance of the second half came in the 53rd minute, when Matteo Darmian was one-on-one with Ederson. The former Man Utd defender did not shoot, but instead backheeled to his teammate, but failed. Then Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s shot from inside the box went over the bar, then Lautaro Martinez’s curling effort failed to Ederson.
