L’Equipe reported that Trent Alexander-Arnold has entered the race to sign Nantes, a club currently playing in the French national championship – Ligue 1.
The reason the Liverpool player is entering the race at this time is because Waldemar Kita, the businessman who has owned Nantes since 2007, is frustrated with the financial situation they are facing.
The 25-year-old, Michael Arnold, who runs his business through an investment firm in London, first contacted Waldemar Kita via video call last summer, the source said.
Since then, they have had further discussions. They have met in person at least twice in Geneva and London recently, with the main content of the agreement being a proposal to buy Nantes for a total of €100 million. Arnold’s father proposed €80 million to be paid directly, with a seller’s credit of €20 million. With this fee, Waldemar Kita would be guaranteed to recover most of the money lost from his investment in the club.
Alexander-Arnold is currently a minority shareholder in the Alpines Formula 1 team, joining an all-star alliance formed by Otro Capital alongside Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, Anthony Joshua and Rory McIlroy. Arnold is now looking to get into football and own a club, with Nantes on his radar.
Nantes are currently 5th in the Ligue 1 table after 4 matches, with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. Last season, Nantes finished 14th, 4 points above the relegation zone.
If the takeover goes through, Alexander-Arnold would become one of the youngest owners in world football, following in the footsteps of Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe, who spent €18m to become the largest shareholder of Ligue 2 club Caen.
