The German national team is currently coached by former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann, whose contract extends until the 2026 World Cup. However, should he choose to return to club management, the German Football Association will need to identify a suitable replacement. Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is seen as a leading contender for the role.
Rudi Völler, the team’s technical director, told ZDF’s Aktuelle Sportstudio that Klopp has always been one of his top choices. Völler emphasized, “If Nagelsmann ever decides to return to a club, there is no better option than Jürgen Klopp, if he’s willing.”
Although Klopp is set to leave Liverpool after the 2023/24 season, he has stated that he has “no, no and no” interest in returning to the coaching bench immediately. Asked when he last spoke to Klopp, Voller said: “It was a while ago. He has been abroad for quite a while. I respect his decision. Jurgen Klopp is having a brilliant career.”
As for Nagelsmann, the German Football Association will create conditions for him to decide his own future after the 2026 World Cup. Voller emphasized: “Nagelsmann will have the right to decide whether he wants to continue leading the national team after the World Cup or not. Whoever takes on the role of coach after the World Cup, they will take over a team with a solid foundation.”
Coach Nagelsmann left his mark on the German national team when he ruthlessly dropped veteran players like Mats Hummels and Leon Goretzka. Instead, the 37-year-old strategist gave opportunities to high-performing names like Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah and Jamal Musiala…
Qualifying for the next World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will begin for European teams in March 2025.
