In the early morning of September 26, Liverpool hosted West Ham in the third round of the English League Cup. Coach Arne Slot made many changes to the squad before the tight schedule. Because of that, the cohesion in the home team’s playing style was affected.
In the 21st minute, from a corner kick, Jarell Quansah unfortunately scored an own goal and helped West Ham open the score. But less than 5 minutes later, Diogo Jota equalized for Liverpool with a beautiful header.
The Portuguese striker completed his double to put The Kop ahead early in the second half with a cool finish. West Ham had a chance to equalise after Michail Antonio came on, but failed to capitalise.
In the 74th minute, Mohamed Salah added a third goal for Liverpool with a rebound after teammate Alexis Mac Allister’s shot was blocked. A few minutes later, Edson Alvarez received a second yellow card and was sent off for a foul on Salah.
With the advantage of one more man, Cody Gakpo added a quickfire double in the final few minutes to seal a 5-1 victory for the Anfield team. This result ended a gloomy week for coach Julen Lopetegui’s team after a 0-3 home defeat to Chelsea at the weekend.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have won six of their last seven games under coach Slot. In the fourth round of the English League Cup, they travel to the Amex Stadium of Brighton. The most notable match in this round will be Tottenham vs Manchester City at home.
