Foden plans to quit football for another career

Man City’s Phil Foden has revealed his plans for a surprising career change after leaving football.

The England international has already won a host of trophies despite being just 24. Since making his City debut in 2017, he has become an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s plans in recent successful seasons.

But Foden has already decided on his next move, and it’s not football-related. In an interview on fishing brand Korda’s YouTube channel, Foden revealed his plans for after retirement.

“This is me when I retire. A fishing vlog,” Foden began. “When I was about five years old, my dad would take me fishing and I’ve loved it ever since. I would catch small fish, and then the more I caught, the bigger fish I caught, even carp. I’d go to places near my house and catch anything. It was exciting — any fishing I could do.”

In the YouTube video, Foden caught a 28-pound carp — just shy of his record of 39 pounds. “At the England camp at Euro 2024, we had lakes on the golf course,” the 24-year-old added. “I used to get out my fishing rod and catch a few carp in my spare time.”

It’s a rare hobby, and Foden has admitted that most of his teammates are often confused by his passion. “Probably 95 per cent of the lads who play football don’t enjoy it,” said Foden, who missed Manchester City’s 2018 Premier League title celebrations to join a pre-planned fishing trip with his dad.

“A few people enjoy fishing, so when people find out they say, ‘what a strange sport to do’. They don’t understand why I enjoy it. Obviously they need to go and try it. I think it’s the perfect hobby to rest your feet and have a bit of a break.”

Foden is joined by a number of football stars including Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Memphis Depay, John Terry and Sergio Aguero who have all expressed their passion for the sport.
