Liverpool claimed a 2-0 home win over Bologna on Wednesday, continuing their strong start to the season. However, one player remains at the center of ongoing debate and controversy.
The only change from the previous weekend’s victory over Wolves was Darwin Nunez stepping in for Diogo Jota, though the Uruguayan was replaced after an hour against the Serie A side.
Steve McManaman has urged the 25-year-old to ‘find his form,’ while Steve Nicol criticized that the number 9 looked ‘lost.’ Still, a former Ballon d’Or runner-up remains supportive of the former Benfica forward.
Speaking on ESPN FC, Jurgen Klinsmann shared his views on Nunez, stating, “I strongly believe he has the talent and qualities to succeed at the top level in both the Premier League and Champions League. His main challenge is consistency, as he hasn’t figured out how to sustain his performance at the highest level.”
“He can have brilliant games but then disappear for a few weeks. I hope he can overcome that over time, but I still believe he has what it takes to be a top-class striker.”
Klinsmann’s comments get to the core of the ongoing discussion about Nunez. While the Uruguayan clearly possesses the potential to become one of Europe’s leading strikers, more than two years after joining Liverpool, he continues to face the same criticisms of inconsistency.
