National Team Jersey Drama: Van Dijk Sent Off, Netherlands Escape Defeat Against Hungary

The match took place in Hungary within the framework of Group A3 (Group 3, Category A) of the UEFA Nations League and ended in a 1-1 draw.

The home team Hungary opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through striker Roland Sallai.

They also had the advantage of leading and playing with an extra man in the 79th minute when Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk was sent off.

In the 76th minute, Liverpool’s centre-back rushed to referee Lukas Fahndrich to demand a yellow card for a Hungarian player, but only the Dutch captain received a yellow card. Just 3 minutes later, Virgil van Dijk missed the ball and received a second yellow card, which meant he was sent off.

Despite being at a disadvantage in both score and numbers, the Netherlands unexpectedly equalized thanks to defender Denzel Dumfries ‘ accurate header in the 83rd minute.

This was Dumfries’ eighth goal in 61 appearances for the Netherlands, with six of those coming in the final minutes of the game.

Last month, the 28-year-old defender also scored to help the Netherlands draw 2-2 with Germany in Group A3.
