Thrilling Match in National Colors: Van Dijk Sent Off as Netherlands Avoid Defeat Against Hungary

Despite being a man down after center-back Van Dijk’s red card, the Netherlands narrowly avoided a loss against Hungary in the early hours of October 12.

The Dutch team, determined to secure a victory at Puskas Arena and stay in the race for the top spot alongside Germany, came close to suffering a bitter defeat at the hands of the Hungarian hosts.

Coach Ronald Koeman deployed a strong lineup, and nearly broke the deadlock in the 14th minute with a chance created by midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. However, Hungary’s goalkeeper Denes Dibusz made an excellent save to keep the score level.

Hungary quickly responded when Roland Sallai unleashed a shot from outside the box following a corner from Dominik Szoboszlai. The ball threaded through the crowded penalty area and struck the Dutch goalpost, much to the disappointment of the home fans.

Hungary’s persistent pressure finally paid off. In the 32nd minute, defender Ádám Nagy provided a perfect assist for Roland Sallai, who fired a powerful shot to open the scoring.

Despite conceding a goal and being down to 10 men in the last 10 minutes, the Netherlands fought back. Cody Gakpo delivered a precise free-kick from the right, finding Denzel Dumfries, who, wearing the captain’s armband in Van Dijk’s absence, powered in a header that left goalkeeper Denes Dibusz with no chance, leveling the match.
