Mo Salah is set to return to Liverpool after withdrawing from the Egypt squad ahead of their Tuesday night match against Mauritania.
The 32-year-old Egypt captain traveled to Cairo earlier this week to join his national team.
Salah recently celebrated his latest goal for his country, scoring in Egypt’s 2-0 victory over Mauritania last night in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
On Tuesday, the Pharaohs will play another qualifier away from home, but they’ll be missing their star player.
In a statement, the Egyptian FA said: “The technical staff of the national football team, led by coach Hossam Hassan, held a meeting with Mohamed Salah, the team captain. During the meeting, it was agreed to rest the player for the upcoming match.”
Salah’s decision to withdraw comes amid concerns over Mauritania’s pitch conditions and their playing style.
Tuesday’s game will take place at the 8,200-capacity Cheikha Ould Boidiya Stadium in Nouakchott, which features an artificial surface.
After last night’s win, Egypt’s manager Hossam Hassan confirmed the possibility of being without Salah for the upcoming match and described their opponents as “aggressive.”
