In the season finale, the Bucks rest Giannis, Damian Lillard, and other players and fall to the Mavericks 109-84.
The Milwaukee Bucks lost 109-84 at the American Airlines Center on Thursday night to wrap up their preseason schedule in Dallas. Every squad had a 1-3 preseason record.
Guard Gary Trent Jr. was the only starter for Milwaukee to play, and in 22 minutes, he scored 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Pat Connaughton played 15 minutes, Delon Wright played 9 minutes off the bench, and Taurean Prince began and played 23 minutes.
Lead scorer for the team was Trent Jr. Tyler Smith, a rookie, grabbed 10 rebounds. Klay Thompson (11 points), Daniel Gafford (11 points), and Kyrie Irving (14 points) led Dallas’ five players who scored in double figures. Olivier-Maxence Prosper, a Marquette University alum, scored nine points in seventeen minutes.
In Philadelphia, the Bucks off the regular season on October 23.
Bucks against. Mavericks: Giannis rests, Damian Lillard plays
Giannis Antetokounmpo slept the first game in Detroit, so Doc Rivers originally intended to increase his preseason minutes. However, after seeing his MVP candidate sit out games against the Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls reserves, the Bucks coach decided to rest him against the Mavericks.
Antetokounmpo received a technical foul and a Flagrant 1 on Monday, demonstrating his obvious frustration with the smaller and less skilled Bulls’ harsh penalties. Therefore, Rivers thought he saw enough of the big man during a scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon before leaving Milwaukee to rest him.
After participating in all three of the Bucks’ previous preseason games, Damian Lillard hurt his right ankle against the Los Angeles Lakers on October 10 and missed one practice. He took a nap as well.
The Bucks also held out for big guys Bobby Portis Jr. and Brook Lopez.
Bucks youngsters Smith and Johnson get going
The Bucks began second-round pick Tyler Smith and first-round pick AJ Johnson, who gave Smith his first extensive action of the preseason. Johnson has been the Bucks’ second- or third-point guard off the bench, and over the previous two games, he played occasionally with the starting lineup.
