Liverpool’s exciting start to the season under new manager Arne Slot has seen the team break records, and the scenes after their latest win were emotional – players applauded Slot as he walked towards them after the final whistle.
Liverpool won 1-0 at Leipzig, one of the clubs that Jurgen Klopp – who left the Reds after nearly nine successful years in charge – will soon oversee in his new role as head of global football at Red Bull.
Few could have predicted that Slot would emerge from Klopp’s shadow at Liverpool so quickly.
Liverpool won their first six away games of a season for the first time in the club’s 132-year history! Meanwhile, Slot is the first manager of an English top-flight club to win 11 of his first 12 games in all competitions, according to Premier League statistics provider Opta.
The Dutchman has guided Liverpool to the top of the Premier League after eight games of the new season. Now, a third successive Champions League win has made Liverpool one of only two teams – along with Aston Villa – to have a maximum of nine points so far.
“So many great teams have worn this shirt, so many great managers have been at this club,” Slot said. “So if you can achieve something that has never been achieved before, it is almost impossible to achieve at a club this big. It is always great to achieve that. Records are great, but there is something better than records – trophies.”
It was no surprise that Liverpool fans and players applauded Slot as he walked towards them after the final whistle on Wednesday.
“He just has to keep going, keep improving us, keep showing what he wants from us and be happy with that – and I think we’re showing that on the pitch. But the season is long. We’ll stay humble and keep going,” said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.
