Foden’s much-needed return

Erling Haaland stole the show in Man City’s 5-0 win over Sparta Prague with a brace, including a “kung-fu” goal, but what caught more attention was the brilliance of Phil Foden, the Premier League’s best player last season.

Foden has been largely absent from Man City since the start of the 2024/25 season, but his classy handling and scoring showed that the young star is ready to return. This is really a good and necessary thing for Man City at a very important stage of the season.

Foden knows better than anyone how much he needs a big boost at this time. The Englishman had a difficult start to the season when he was absent due to illness and injury, but he returned to the starting lineup and opened the scoring after just 3 minutes, with a sharp turn and finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Even though Haaland scored two goals, including a superb goal, it was Foden who was named Man of the Match after a great performance. He was very happy to be back on the pitch, scoring goals and most importantly, feeling confident again.

“I’m just getting a little bit sharper. I want to get back and do something. If you don’t check what you’ve done, things can change very quickly. I’m someone who always checks what’s around me and tries to look at what’s closest to me. Scoring early, getting back on the pitch and feeling fit has really boosted my confidence. I’m on the right track,” Foden said after the match.

After being named the Premier League Player of the Year last season, not only fans but Foden himself also expects to do the same this year. “That’s the standard I set for myself and I want to get back to that level. I think the season is long enough to get back to my level. I need to keep going and keep showing what I can do,” Foden added.
