Darwin Nunez tried to shift the credit to a fellow Liverpool star after scoring the decisive goal in Wednesday’s Champions League victory over RB Leipzig.
Arne Slot’s remarkable start as Liverpool manager continued with Nunez’s 27th-minute goal, securing a crucial away win that virtually guarantees the team’s spot in the knockout stages.
Making just his fourth start of the season, Nunez led the line and celebrated his second goal of the campaign in Leipzig. The Uruguayan found the net with a simple tap-in, pushing Mohamed Salah’s cross over the line to maintain Liverpool’s perfect Champions League record. Despite the celebration, Nunez appeared modest when surrounded by his teammates.
Salah’s cross was already heading toward goal before Nunez’s touch, and the striker tried to convince captain Virgil van Dijk that Salah deserved the real credit for the goal.
Humbly accepting congratulations from Van Dijk, Nunez was caught on camera modestly pointing at Salah and saying, “No, it’s Mo,” giving credit for the goal to his teammate.
However, Van Dijk wasn’t as convinced, tapping Nunez on the chest and responding, “We need more,” urging him to continue delivering. Salah didn’t seem concerned by Nunez’s intervention and was visibly pleased as Liverpool took the lead in this crucial match, moving to nine points in the Champions League.
Nunez will now be hoping that his goal and strong overall performance will earn him a starting spot in the upcoming weekend clash against Arsenal, as Liverpool aim to hold on to their top spot in the Premier League.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot encouraged Nunez to take full credit for his goal against Leipzig and expressed his happiness at seeing the striker find the back of the net, especially after his recent struggles.
