Darwin Nunez attempted to give credit to a fellow Liverpool star after netting the winning goal in Wednesday’s Champions League triumph over RB Leipzig.
Arne Slot’s impressive tenure as Liverpool manager continued with Nunez’s 27th-minute strike, securing a key away victory that virtually assures the team’s progression to the knockout stages.
In only his fourth start of the season, Nunez led the attack and celebrated his second goal of the campaign. The Uruguayan scored with a simple tap-in, nudging Mohamed Salah’s cross over the line to keep Liverpool’s flawless Champions League record intact. Despite the moment of celebration, Nunez appeared humble when surrounded by his teammates.
Salah’s cross seemed destined for the back of the net before Nunez’s finishing touch, and the striker tried to convince captain Virgil van Dijk that Salah deserved the credit. Nunez was seen on camera modestly pointing at Salah and saying, “No, it’s Mo,” while accepting Van Dijk’s congratulations.
However, Van Dijk wasn’t fully persuaded, tapping Nunez on the chest and replying, “We need more,” encouraging the striker to keep pushing. Salah, meanwhile, showed no signs of being bothered and appeared pleased as Liverpool took the lead in the pivotal match, moving up to nine points in the Champions League group.
Nunez will now hope that his goal and strong performance will earn him a starting spot in the upcoming Premier League match against Arsenal, as Liverpool looks to maintain their position at the top of the table.
