Arsenal have beaten Liverpool in both of their last two Premier League games at the Emirates Stadium. But ahead of this week’s clash, their chances of winning are in doubt.
Liverpool are in good form, winning seven of their eight games this season, while Arsenal suffered a shock defeat in their last game against Bournemouth.
Mikel Arteta’s side are also suffering from a number of injuries and suspensions, meaning Ben White has been forced to play centre-back alongside Gabriel, with defensive midfielder Thomas Partey filling in at right-back.
The rare positive point for Arsenal was that two injured players Bukayo Saka and Justin Timber recovered and returned to the starting lineup.
While Timber played solidly, almost stopping Mohamad Salah, Saka was an abundant source of energy on the right wing for Arsenal in the first half. In fact, in the 9th minute, he even scored with the first shot of the match.
White’s long pass was sent behind the Liverpool defence. Saka sprinted down the right post, slotted the ball between Andy Robertson’s legs and fired into the roof of the net past Caoimhin Kelleher. At 23 years and 52 days, Saka became the youngest Arsenal player to reach 50 Premier League goals.
The England winger has been directly involved in 10 goals in eight Premier League appearances this season, with three goals and seven assists.
In the 9th minute, when Arsenal opened the scoring, Virgil van Dijk was the player who directly made the mistake because he was in the wrong position.
The Liverpool captain pushed too high, forgetting Bukayo Saka on the right wing. Taking advantage of this, the Arsenal player dribbled straight into the middle, handled it delicately to eliminate Andrew Robertson’s pursuit, and scored against Kelleher.
