Liverpool has enjoyed a strong start under Arne Slot, though there’s still room for improvement. With the transfer window opening in two months, the Reds are already assessing areas in the squad they can strengthen.
While most transfer discussions have focused on replacements for players nearing the end of their contracts or bolstering the midfield, Slot may also be looking to improve other positions.
A recent report from Record mentioned that Liverpool representatives attended Benfica’s 5-0 win over Rio Ave and their 3-1 Champions League loss to Feyenoord earlier in October.
Although it’s possible that Liverpool is monitoring rumored target Orkun Kokcu, another focus of these scouting missions could be left-back Alvaro Carreras, who has been linked to the Reds.
Carreras, who played 90 minutes in both matches, could indeed be the reason for Liverpool’s interest. The 21-year-old, a product of Manchester United’s academy, has emerged as a Liverpool target, especially as Robertson, now 30, has struggled at times this season and may soon face a decline in performance.
Known for his precise passing and aerial ability, Carreras could be an ideal successor to Robertson.
He played 30 games for Benfica last season and has already provided two assists in 13 appearances this year.
The Spanish U21 international, valued at €7.8 million, never made a senior appearance for Manchester United but spent loan spells with Preston North End and Granada before joining Benfica on a permanent basis this summer. Carreras could be a smart addition for Liverpool in the January transfer window as they look to strengthen their left-back options.
