Brighton narrowly lost to Liverpool in the League Cup midweek but began their return trip to Anfield strongly. After Verbruggen blocked a dangerous attempt from Darwin Núñez, Brighton struck first in the 14th minute, with right-back Kadioglu scoring a stunning curling shot from distance.
Brighton continued to dominate after taking the lead, nearly doubling their advantage in the 27th minute when Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Kelleher, cleared a one-on-one situation with Rutter.
The home side was fortunate again in the 36th minute when an unmarked Kadioglu volleyed over the bar.
Liverpool had a few attacking opportunities in the first half, but they struggled to create any clear-cut chances, aside from Núñez’s early attempt.
Before halftime, Welbeck had two free-kick opportunities for Brighton, but both times, he missed the target, sending the ball into the side netting and failing to beat Kelleher.
Liverpool intensified their pressure early in the second half, with Gakpo curling a shot just wide of the post, while Verbruggen produced incredible saves to deny Mac Allister’s close-range header and a shot from Salah.
It seemed Liverpool might struggle to convert their chances, but the game took a dramatic turn.
In the 69th minute, Gakpo’s cross from the left wing bypassed everyone and went directly into Brighton’s net. Just three minutes later, Liverpool capitalized on a counter-attack, with Salah scoring his trademark left-footed shot into the top corner, putting Liverpool up 2-1.
Brighton pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Liverpool’s defense held firm, blocking almost every shot. The hosts maintained their one-goal lead through four minutes of added time to secure the win.
